City starts with phased opening of some of its Motor Vehicle Registration and Licencing offices tomorrow

The City of Cape Town opens some of its Motor Vehicle Registration and Licencing offices tomorrow on Tuesday 9 June 2020 and on Wednesday 10 June 2020 to members of the public. Cash offices across the metro are open. Read more below:
The City reminds customers that Motor Vehicle Licencing Offices and revenue/cash offices are operating with a skeleton staff. This could lead to longer queues. Motorists are encouraged to avoid long queues and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by making use of the 90-day grace period for licence renewals or by using online services. If queues are too long, please visit our offices later in the week.
For motorists, the 90-day grace period still applies for expired driving licence cards, temporary driving licences, learner’s licences, PrDPs and vehicle registration and licence renewal discs from 1 June 2020. We urge customers to please be patient and only visit our offices for pressing matters this week.
All vehicle owners who have applied online for the renewal of vehicle licences from 26 March 2020 need to re-apply online as all of those applications have either expired or could not be processed due to the COVID-19 lockdown and the impact on the national traffic information system and operation of the South African Post Office.
The City has taken all the necessary precautions as per the guidance of the Western Cape Government and National Authorities.
Grace periods apply from 1 June for:
- driving licence card renewals
- learner’s licences
- temporary permits
- professional driving permits (PrDPs)
- roadworthy certificates
- the registering and licencing of a motor vehicle, as well as annual licence renewals
In addition, the validity period for the renewal of a motor trade number licence is extended for a further six months from 1 June 2020.
A phased opening of Motor Vehicle Registration and Licencing (MVRL) offices apply. If in doubt, phone the particular office first to determine if it is open before heading there in person and only visit an office in person if urgent. We encourage customers to visit later in the week if queues are too long.

The City continues to encourage the use of online services and e-Services where possible. Customers who do not have internet access and are not making use of the payment options available at retailers can now make municipal account payments, indigent applications, payment arrangements and rates rebate applications.
